VP of Strategy and Growth, Indigenous and Community Engagement (ICE)
Derek Chum is a proud member of the Moose Cree First Nation and the VP of Strategy and Growth at Indigenous and Community Engagement (ICE) Inc. Derek is also the lead negotiator on behalf of Nishnawbe Aski Nation for Education Jurisdiction negotiations with Canada. Derek was a commercial lawyer for many years and worked with Indigenous clients and communities providing business and project advice across Ontario. He serves on the board of the Moose Cree Group of Companies, the business arm of the Moose Cree First Nation, which provides employment and opportunity for Moose Cree members through its various business ventures. Derek is a trustee for the Moose Cree First Nation Properity Trust. Derek is also on the board for Unity Health, a network of three hospitals in the Greater Toronto Area, including St. Michael’s Hospital in downtown Toronto. He is also on the board for MiziweBiik Development Corporation which funds affordable housing for Indigenous people in Toronto. Derek served on the board and was Chair of Five Nations Energy Inc., the first Indigenous-owned and operated transmission line in Ontario. He was also the first Vice President of Indigenous Relations at Hydro Onewhere he developed and implemented Indigenous relations strategies, engaged on a number of transmission and distribution projects, and negotiated with First Nation communities on reserve land permits and equity positions on large transmission projects.
